Educational institutions should actively encourage their students to choose fields of study that will prepare them for lucrative careers.
Education is essential for every youngster to nurture their talents and prepared themselves to enter society. Whether educational institutions should actively encourage their students to choose fields of study that will prepare them for lucrative careers can be weighed in many aspects. In general, I do not concur with the statement, and the reasons will be illustrated below.
Admittedly, the schools encourage students to pursue the field that can bring wealth for themselves which seems plausible. Because students cannot have a sight to see which career is lucrative and educational institutions have plentitude resources to help them. However, the statement fundamentally slight the inherent talents of students and the basic role of educational institutions.
First of all, individuals are disparate and every student has his characteristic and interest, so educational institutions should not diminish the consideration of those aspects. For example, in contemporary society, doctors and scientists have higher average wages than other careers. If teachers persuade and encourage a student, who has talent in fine art fields such as painting, to pursue a lucrative yet uninterested field, the educational institution will not only bury a potential fine art master but also lead a student’s life dull. Moreover, the world will only have two careers survived if educational institutions follow the logic of the statement. Therefore, we should not ignore the inherent talents and personalities of students and authentically help them develop their interests.
On the other hand, we should consider the primary role of educational institutions. A school is a place for youngsters to have an exploratory academic pursue and provide the resources to aid those talented students to experience success and failure without pressure. Besides, teachers should play a role like a tour guide for providing directions in their study and life development. It is not to say teachers should interfere with students’ decisions but should provide suggestions and leave them to explore the future by themselves. Since the dynamic world is built by the diversity of individuals and the educational institutions should not set any restrictions on their developments. Consequently, the statement is weakened, and we should rethink the basic position and function of educational institutions in students’ life.
To sum up, the statement is not as persuasive as it stands. Base on my expositions mentioned above, educational institutions should guide and help students to explore their future by themselves, instead of pointing out the path and restraining students’ development.
