All university students should be required to take history courses no matter what their field of study is.

History is comprised of many events that happened and recorded in various forms, which provides references about the past. Whether all university students should be required to take history courses no matter their field of study can be weighed in many aspects. From my perspective, I do not concur with the statement that history courses are mandatory for all students.

Admittedly, some people will hold a position that history is an opportune indicator of our life. For example, with the awareness and recognizance about past events, we can avoid those mistakes and carry out the results more efficiently. However, the statement neglects characters in different fields of study.

First of all, some students may not have sufficient time to take history courses because they have to spend most of the time apprehending knowledge in their fields. For example, scientific college students have to study many hard and esoteric subjects to pass the examinations. Moreover, they have to conduct many experiments in the laboratory to deeper their understanding of the theories. After all, the development of science is complicated and further contributes to the prosperity of society. On the contrary, if those students are required to take history courses, they will be disturbed and cannot concentrate on scientific subjects. Therefore, we should not overlook the attribute of a specific field that students may need to devote most energy to absorb knowledge.

On the other hand, history courses are not necessarily lead to success in other fields. For example, after graduation, students from engineering schools usually become engineers in many fields, playing the roles of problem-solving experts. They have a large amount of knowledge to solve engineering problems, make constructions, and improve our convenient life. In this case, history courses have limited effects and benefits to their future career development. Although history may help them to understand the solution methods from ancestors, those experiences may be outdated nowadays because it is a fast-changing generation. Consequently, we have to consider that history may not be helpful to certain fields, such as engineers, and it is not always conducive to the development of careers.

To sum up, the statement is not as persuasive as it stands. Based on my expositions mentioned above, we should consider different characters in many fields, and whether history courses can benefit students’ career development. After all, the university should be a place providing students an environment to achieve success in their future.
